Secretary of State Tre Hargett Warns Tennesseans About Email Spoofing Scam
February 18, 2025
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) – Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett today issued a warning about an email spoofing scam targeting its recipients.
This deceptive email containing the subject line: “Exciting News!” claims that Secretary Hargett has filed a sponsorship on an individual’s behalf in Tennessee; it also asks recipients to keep an eye out for an email directly from the Secretary, expressing a desire to personally connect.
“While this communication appears to originate from our office, it is not legitimate,” said Secretary Hargett. “We have seen similar scams like this one in the past, and we encourage all Tennesseans to remain vigilant, so they are not victimized by bad actors.”
Most email communications from the Secretary of State’s office originate from tnsos.gov domains. They also feature additional contact information including signatures, division phone numbers, and mailing addresses.
If you receive this correspondence, please forward it to Communications@tnsos.gov, and we will share it with the proper authorities.
