NEWBERRY COUNTY — During Tuesday’s Statewide Primary, approximately 18 percent (2,803) of Newberry County voters came out to select who they want on the ballot in November.

In the vote for governor, James Smith won on the Democratic side with 148,205 votes (61.81 percent) statewide. In Newberry County he received 1,146 votes. Phil Noble received 25,512 votes statewide and 104 votes in Newberry County, and Marguerite Willis received 66,053 votes statewide and 297 votes in Newberry County.

On the Republican side, there will be a run off between incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster and John Warren. McMaster received 155,486 votes (42.32 percent) statewide and Warren received 102,254 votes (27.83 percent) statewide. In Newberry County, McMaster received 1,435 votes and Warren received 716.

Catherine Templeton received 78,582 votes statewide, and 478 in Newberry County, John Yancey McGill received 6,364 votes statewide and 31 in Newberry County and Kevin Bryant received 24,745 statewide and 134 in Newberry County.

In the Republican race for secretary of state, incumbent Mark Hammond received 217,918 votes (65.44 percent) statewide, winning the nomination. In Newberry County he received 2,003 votes. Nelson Faerber received 41,519 votes statewide, 270 in Newberry County; Joshua Putnam received 44,531 statewide, 228 in Newberry County; Kerry Wood received 29,021 statewide, 167 in Newberry County.

In the Republican race for attorney general, there will be a run off between incumbent Alan Wilson and challenger Todd Atwater. Wilson received 166,679 votes (48.65 percent) statewide and Atwater received 101,874 votes (29.74 percent) statewide. In Newberry County Wilson received 1,416 votes and Atwater received 663. William Herlong received 74,046 votes statewide, 643 in Newberry County.

In the Democratic U.S. House of Representatives District Three race, Mary Geren won with 12,956 votes (69.76 percent) statewide, in Newberry County she received 145 votes. Hosea Cleveland received 5,616 votes statewide, and 71 votes in Newberry County.

In the Democratic U.S. House of Representatives District Five race, Archie Parnell won with 16,619 votes (59.98 percent) statewide. In Newberry County he received 748 votes. Mark Ali received 3,712 votes statewide, 166 Newberry County; Steve Lough received 2,621 votes statewide, 134 Newberry County, Sidney Moore received 4,755 statewide, 203 Newberry County.

On the Democratic question, Do you support passing a state law allowing doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients? The majority of voters voted yes, with 200,436 votes (82.03 percent) statewide.

On the Democrat question, Do you support passing a state law requiring the governor of South Carolina to accept all federal revenues offered to support Medicaid and Medicaid expansion efforts in the state? The majority voted yes with 225,286 votes (92.75 percent).

On the Republican question, Do you believe that voters should have the option to choose to affiliate with a political party when they register to vote or change their voter registration in South Carolina? The majority voted yes with 255,490 votes (82.34 percent) statewide.

On the Republican question, Do you believe that South Carolina’s tax code should be brought into conformity with the new Trump tax cuts in the federal tax code for maximum simplification and to lower the overall tax burden on South Carolina taxpayers and businesses? The majority voted yes with 266,422 votes (92.30 percent) statewide.

The run off election for the Republican governor and attorney general races will be held on June 26. You are eligible to vote if you voted in the Republican Primary on Tuesday, or did not vote at all.
